## Overview The Nahua (Nahuatl-speaking peoples of central Mexico, including those who built and inhabited the Aztec empire of Tenochtitlan) maintained a supernatural cosmological system of considerable complexity, documented primarily through post-contact sources: alphabetic records produced by Spanish colonisers and by indigenous scribes trained in alphabetic writing after 1519, alongside surviving pictorial codices, many of which were destroyed in the colonial period.
