Investigation Summary

Napier Prison in Napier, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand operated from 1862 to 1993. It is a Category 1 heritage-listed site (Heritage New Zealand, 2020). Four executions were carried out between 1884 and 1889; Kereopa Te Rau was executed here in 1872.

The prison was officially declared the worst in New Zealand in 1909. 8, ~256 killed). The site now operates as a heritage attraction managed by LINZ.
