Investigation Summary
Larnach Castle (Otago Peninsula, New Zealand) was built from 1871 by William James Mudie Larnach in the Gothic Revival style, designed by R. A. Lawson.
It is listed as a Historic Place Category 1 by Heritage New Zealand. William Larnach died by suicide at the New Zealand Parliament Buildings in Wellington on 12 October 1898; no member of the Larnach family died at the castle itself. After decades of decline, the Barker family began restoration in 1967.
The castle operates today as a hotel and tourist attraction. Paranormal claims circulate widely but are largely unverified by primary sources.
