Investigation Summary

Gothic castle in Central Bohemia, built c. 1253-1278 under Ottokar II of Bohemia. Notable for its unusual architectural design — no external fortifications, no water supply, and no strategic location — which has prompted scholarly and popular speculation.

During the Second World War the SS used the castle as a book depository from 1943, confirmed by archival records. The castle is the subject of longstanding Czech folklore associating it with a sealed chasm, and is privately owned and open to the public since 1999.
