Himuro Mansion (Urban Legend)

Himuro Mansion is a Japanese urban legend whose origins lie in the North American marketing of the survival horror video game Fatal Frame (Tecmo, 2001). The game's North American release (April 2002) carried a 'based on a true story' tagline and a press release claiming a real mansion outside Tokyo was the site of ritualistic murders. This tagline appeared only in the North American edition.

Extensive research in Japanese and English sources has found no pre-game documentation of the legend, no verified physical location, and no historical records of the claimed murders. The legend is considered to have been manufactured for marketing purposes.
