Investigation Summary

Medieval and Baroque castle at Hørve, Odsherred, Zealand, Denmark. 1215 by Bishop Peder Sunesen of Roskilde. Confiscated by the Danish Crown at the Reformation in 1536; used as a prison for noble and ecclesiastical prisoners 1536–1664.

James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell (third husband of Mary, Queen of Scots) was imprisoned in solitary confinement from 1573 and died at the castle on 14 April 1578 — an established historical fact confirmed by Encyclopædia Britannica. Left in ruins during Swedish Wars; rebuilt in Baroque style by the Adeler family from 1694. Adeler family lost the castle 1932; operating as hotel and restaurant since 1937; Michelin star; Relais & Châteaux member; UNESCO Global Geopark Odsherred.

1930s skeleton discovery — no primary record found; sceptic named Brocarde, 2025), Grey Lady (castle tradition), Earl of Bothwell (carriage sounds tradition). All paranormal claims are Low confidence.
