Investigation Summary
Gothic Revival castle and woodland estate at Tullamore, County Offaly, Ireland. 1800–1812. Commissioned by Charles William Bury, later 1st Earl of Charleville (second creation).
In April 1861, Lady Harriet Bury, aged 7, fell from the main staircase banister and died; her death is confirmed by newspaper cuttings held at Offaly Archives (ref: 6abr-ns44-9pqa) and by Thomas Lacy's 1863 publication. Lady Harriet is buried in the family vault at St Catherine's Church, Tullamore. The Earldom lapsed in 1885; the castle fell into disrepair with the roof removed by 1968.
Restoration began 1971–1973 under Charleville Castle Heritage Trust (since 2014). Paranormal claims centring on an apparition of Lady Harriet are all Low confidence. Eleanor Ridley's Offaly History Blog account (2018) explicitly notes that her grandmother did not believe the castle was haunted.
