Investigation Summary

NSW psychiatric institution on Wangal and Dharug Country at Rozelle (Lilyfield), Sydney, opened 1 August 1878. The centrepiece Kirkbride Block (1878–1885) was designed by NSW Government Architect James Barnet in the moral therapy tradition and is listed on the NSW State Heritage Register (1999) and Commonwealth Heritage List (2004). The facility reached peak occupancy of approximately 1,500 patients in the 1930s.

The 1955 Stoller Report and the 1960–61 McClemens Royal Commission (approximately 120 witnesses, 116 exhibits) documented systemic cruelty, neglect, and overcrowding. F. Archibald (1902–1919), Louisa Lawson (died on site 1920), and Bea Miles.

Sydney College of Arts occupied the Kirkbride Block from 1996; the Callan Park (Special Provisions) Act 2006 (NSW) restricts future development. PRN research found no paranormal witness accounts of any kind.
