Investigation Summary
A Victorian-era psychiatric institution in Beechworth, northeast Victoria, Australia, operating from 1 October 1867 to 1995. Official administrative records are held at the Public Record Office Victoria (PROV); a 2017 peer-reviewed study examined case books covering 698 admissions 1900–1912. The site is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register and has been the subject of a multidisciplinary academic study (Charles Sturt University).
Institutional practices including ECT and prefrontal lobotomies are documented for the late 1940s–early 1950s. No reliable first-person paranormal witness accounts were found; all available ghost claims trace to commercial tour operators. Now privately owned and operating as an arts and tourism complex since 2013.
